Introduction to Fidjrossè's Marine Biodiversity
Fidjrossè is a coastal zone located west of Cotonou, Benin, characterized by a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cotonou lagoon system. This geographic position gives Fidjrossè unique biodiversity, influenced by both saltwater and brackish waters.
Coastal and Lagoon Ecosystems
Fidjrossè and its immediate surroundings have diverse ecosystems:
- Sandy beaches and intertidal zones: The coast is mainly characterized by fine sand beaches, essential for many invertebrate species and nesting sites for sea turtles.
- Adjacent lagoon ecosystems: The vast Cotonou lagoon system has a strong influence. These ecosystems are rich and brackish, with mangroves, seagrass beds and muddy bottoms serving as nurseries.
- Shallow coastal waters: The Atlantic waters off Fidjrossè harbor marine fauna typical of the Gulf of Guinea.
Marine Species of the Gulf of Guinea
- Fish: Sardinella, lagoon tilapia, mullets, red snappers, and various catfish species.
- Crustaceans: Pink shrimp, blue crab, and mangrove crabs.
- Mollusks: Mangrove oysters and various bivalves.
- Marine reptiles: Olive ridley, green, and leatherback sea turtles.
- Birds: Terns, gulls, herons and egrets.
